Whenever someone decides to embark on a solo journey, the most common question they'll hear afterwards is...

"Are you sure? Isn't it dangerous?"

This is followed by a series of concerns, speculations, and attempts to dissuade from the surrounding environment.

What is constantly overlooked is the fact that any place can be dangerous if not researched enough. Also, safety is a highly subjective concept – someone may perceive a certain place as safe, while others may characterize it as dangerous for various reasons.

Therefore, when embarking on a solo journey, it is crucial to gather information and be prepared for different scenarios.

Here are 10 safety tips for solo travellers:

1. Plan Ahead & Do Your Safety Research

Now we've all heard about the importance of planning ahead to ensure as little danger as possible, so I'll just quickfire a few of the most important ones;

  • Create an itinerary and most importantly, thoroughly research the safety aspects of your destination.

  • Identify the locations of hospitals, police stations, and other emergency services.

  • Explore public transportation options and choose the one that suits you best. If renting a car, gather information about reputable companies and rental conditions.

  • Verify safe ATM locations.

  • Learn about common street scams and ways to avoid them.

  • Investigate the political stability and potential conflicts in your destination.

  • Explore popular destinations as well as safe and unsafe neighbourhoods.

Fortunately, all this information is available in one travel safety app - Vigilios.

2. Get a Medical Checkup Before Your Trip

A pre-travel medical checkup assesses your overall health. If you have a chronic illness, the doctor can provide advice on managing it during your journey.

The doctor will recommend specific vaccines and preventive measures based on your travel destination. This is crucial if you're travelling to areas where certain diseases are prevalent or if you have specific health risks.

If you're carrying heavy-duty medication, carry a doctor's note as proof of medical necessity, especially if you plan to travel extensively.

These precautions can safeguard your health and legal standing during your journey.

3. Travel Insurance!

Protect yourself as well as your money from unexpected events that might hinder your travels. Cancellation and trip interruption insurance can help reimburse costs due to natural disasters, weather emergencies, specific illnesses, and other issues.

Other types of travel insurance can assist in covering unforeseen medical expenses, loss of baggage, theft, and more.

Before choosing a policy, carefully read the terms and pay attention to exclusions and coverage limitations.

4. Choose Your Accommodation Wisely

While it may seem adventurous, it is not advisable to leave accommodation decisions for the last minute. Thoroughly look at reviews, especially regarding cleanliness and safety, and choose accommodations based on personal preferences - from hotels and hostels to Airbnb. If possible, select accommodation not on the ground floor but also not too far from reception or staff.

Hotels are usually top-tier when it comes to safety. They are usually the most expensive option but usually have high-security standards. Things such as 24/7 reception presence, the quality of the door locks, and the presence of security cameras are not to be overlooked. Also, it goes without saying, but it's important not to leave valuable items exposed and to use the in-room safe if available!

Hostels are accommodations designed for travellers looking for an affordable and social alternative to hotels. They usually offer shared rooms with multiple beds or private rooms at lower prices than hotels. On the downside, there is a lack of privacy and services.

There are different types of hostels; youth hostels are usually intended for younger travellers, party hostels are known for nightlife and social activities, and luxury hostels offer more comfort and privacy.

If you want a quieter environment, skip party hostels and look for youth hostels, which usually have more security measures for younger travellers.

Airbnb is an online platform where people can rent or rent out private accommodation worldwide. Airbnb is flexible and offers a wide range of options – from renting an entire apartment to renting a room. It can also provide a more local experience as it is often located in residential neighbourhoods. On the flip side, the quality can be highly variable, so it's important to carefully read accommodation reviews.

Top tip! Upon arrival, physically inspect the room to ensure there are no hidden cameras and check the locking mechanisms on doors and windows during your stay!

5. Share Your Travel Plan with Family and Friends

Inform your close ones about your travel plan, provide them with hotel information, and share details of planned activities. Stay connected with them so they know you're safe and everything is going well. This provides a sense of security for both you and them.

6. Distribute Money and Make Copies of Documents

As a solo traveller, you may unfortunately become a target for pickpockets and thieves. Therefore, always keep in mind to distribute money in different places, such as different bags, pockets, or hidden parts of your luggage. It's even better if you hide them in unconventional places. So, don't put money in your sock because that hasn't been an unconventional place for safe money hiding for a long time. Be creative! The same applies to the money you carry - spread it in multiple places and pockets.

We recommend getting a money pouch that you can wear under your shirt, thus securing the money you carry to some extent. Of course, another option is not to carry much cash at all and use a prepaid card for payment.

Be sure to also scan or make physical copies of your passport and ID card, and store them separately from the originals so you can access them in case of theft or loss. If there is a safe or reception in your accommodation, leave the original documents there and take copies with you.

It is recommended to leave copies of your personal documents with a family member or friend at home – this can also facilitate bureaucratic procedures in case your documents are stolen or lost.

7. Arrive at Your Destination During the Daylight

Opt for a daytime arrival, even if it means paying extra for a daytime ticket.

Arriving in an unfamiliar place at night carries more risks, as there are fewer people around, and many offices and stores may be closed.

Arriving during the day brings several advantages, including better orientation and surveying of the surroundings. Daylight makes it easier to recognize landmarks and accommodations and allows safer navigation in unfamiliar areas.

Moreover, safety is usually higher during daylight hours, making it easier to spot potential dangers or undesirable situations. Arriving during the day also provides more time for relaxed settling, exploring the surroundings, and planning activities, reducing the feeling of stress and haste.

8. Trust Your Instincts & Use White Lies

Certainly, openness to new acquaintances while travelling has its advantages, but it is important to approach each relationship with a dose of caution.

Unfortunately, we cannot always assess other people's intentions, so it is advisable to keep private information about yourself, especially when faced with questions like:

"Are you travelling with someone?"

"Are you alone here?"

"Where are you staying?"

It is important to listen to your intuition and act accordingly. Do not fall for persistent help that may seem altruistic but may have hidden motives. In such situations, if you feel the need, feel free to invent a story about yourself, who you are, who you are with, and why you are there.

Preserving privacy can be crucial for safety, and small white lies can serve as a means of self-protection in unfamiliar circumstances. Believing in yourself, with caution and adaptation, helps preserve independence and enjoy solo travel.

9. Blend In with the Environment

Being confident while travelling solo doesn't necessarily mean pretending to be familiar with the country's language or wearing clothing identical to the local style.

However, it can be useful to avoid obvious tourist signs such as large backpacks, cameras, selfie sticks, or constantly viewing Google Maps. Instead, try to behave confidently and calmly as you explore new areas.

It is important to give the impression that you know what you are doing and where you are going, reducing the likelihood of attracting unnecessary attention. If you need help, there's nothing wrong with asking for it, but do so discreetly.

10. Don't Flash Wealth

A smart practice for solo travellers is to leave expensive items at home or securely store them in the hotel. Wearing expensive clothing and jewellery while travelling can attract unnecessary attention, so it is advisable to choose more discreet clothing that won't arouse too much interest.

It is also recommended to carry a bag or backpack with a reliable zipper to further protect your personal belongings. Keep your bag or backpack close to your body and be attentive to your valuables, especially in crowds or busy areas.

If using public transportation, be especially cautious with personal items. Pay attention to your bags, wallets, and other valuable items when entering and exiting transportation. If you carry a backpack, wear it on the front of your body to better monitor your belongings.

Embarking on a solo journey is a thrilling experience that demands a blend of enthusiasm and preparedness. As we've explored the essential safety tips for solo travellers, it's evident that a proactive mindset, meticulous planning, and a keen sense of self-awareness are the keys to a secure and enjoyable solo adventure.

Remember, safety is not a one-size-fits-all concept. Each traveler's perception of safety is unique, and shaped by individual preferences and experiences. The importance of thorough research, from understanding the local safety landscape to choosing the right accommodation, cannot be overstated. Planning ahead, sharing your itinerary with loved ones, and staying connected provide an additional layer of security.
